Brett Dennen is a modern day troubadour with one foot tapping to the tradition of Woody Guthrie and the other foot in step with his social and political convictions. In 2013 he released his fifth studio album Smoke and Mirrors, which was recorded in Nashville and produced the widely acclaimed hit "Wild Child." His voice carries a unique quality that draws listeners in by being simultaneously at home in the music yet tinged with a hint of urgency. A ticket to a Brett Dennen concert will put you face to face with a songwriter who is determined to deliver an energetic, positive and uplifting performance. His ability to do just that has landed him opening slots for John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and David Matthews. His recent hit song has joined the ranks of many of his other fan favorites that inspire crowds to sing along with his performance.

Dennen began improvising songs around the campfire as a teen which eventually led to gigging, recording and the release of his self-titled first album in 2004. His second album, So Much More followed in 2006 and his third album, Hope for the Hopeless debuted at No. 41 on the Billboard Top 200 in 2008. His 2011 album, Loverboy debuted at No. 55 and featured the radio-hit single "Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)."? In addition to radio play, Dennen's songs have graced the television airwaves on episodes of Parenthood, Grey's Anatomy and American Idol. He has an impressive 2014 tour schedule with dates booked in the U.S., Ireland, Scotland, the UK and Holland. This down-to-earth guy is now bringing his message to many parts of the globe, and maybe someday to the whole world.
Amazing funny guy will talk to anybody in the audience.
I would have given it 5 stars if the drums didn't drown out his voice (and thereby the lyrics, which is particularly important on the new stuff). Also, he didn't play Heaven. I'm sure he's sick of it, but I never tire of it. I LOVE that song. The new songs were good (though I thought Dharma Baby was Donna Baby -- those too-loud drums)! All in all Brett Dennan is unique: very entertaining, interesting and cool; different in a good way! I thought Langhorne Slim was pretty good and I loved "Ocean City"(being an ex-east coaster) but he got a bit corny towards the end.
Brett Dennen mixes folk, rock, Calypso, and everything under the kitchen sink to create a very unique sound that should appeal much more broadly than it does. His three-piece band is spectacular. Perfect for the summer.
Third time I have seen Brett. He is better every time. His ever evolving songbook shows his growth as a writer. Only problem is he has so much material that every show he never gets to all his hits I want to hear. Oh well, just have to see him again next time he comes.
This was me and my wife date night away from our young children. This was the perfect venue which created an intimate setting. I was blow away by how he was able to adapt with having an injured index finger. The venue also was nice and small which added to the intimacy. Me and my wife will be back to the venue and to see him again.
Brett Dennen was fantastic! The sound and performance were really good despite the echoey venue. Great songs and fun engagement with the audience in between. I’m looking forward to seeing him again at the Beach Road Weekend.
Music was awesome. Concert was pretty dirty and gross though
Brett dennen’s is an amazing performer in Somerville Theater is a really fun venue. Just intimate enough.., and great acoustics!
The sound was bad up on the balcony, Bretts microphone was not loud enough it was overpowered by the instruments. Everyone was mentioning they couldn’t hear him so I went down to the sound guys to let they know. They tweaked it a little but not enough. It was ashame because it’s all about the lyrics. It still was fun however. Sound engineers need to check upstairs next time.
Brett Dennen is such a great musician, entertainer, activist and human being! His music touches people of all ages. His positive messaging is exactly what we need, particularly in a very long pandemic. His ballads are thought provoking and touching. His pop/rock tunes get the crowd up on their feet dancing and feeling great. In the middle of a long winter, Brett gives us the warmth and hope of better days ahead! Quite simply, the man knows how to spread joy! Thanks for another dose of happiness, Brett! The Somerville Theatre was rocking last Thursday night!
