The collaboration between Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra is a melding of singing and performance that one seldom hears today. The music's range from Schubert through Schuman, Grieg, Shostakovich up to the contomporary composer Maria Schneider, provided the listener with the range of compositions that was most satisfying. We made a 600 (300 hundred each way) mile drive to the concert and we can tell you it was well worth the trip. Dawn Upshaw's musicianship matched that of the orchestra.
As a longtime fan of Dawn Upshaw, I was delighted with her performance with the ACO. The musicians were completely professional and Ms Upshaw's renditions were heartfelt and well delivered with her characteristic pure tone and minimal vibrato. "Winter Morning Walks," nine poems by former Poet Laureate Ted Kooser set to music by Maria Schneider, was especially effective as it evoked scenes of a midwestern winter landscape. My only complaint was that the miking could have been more effectively nuanced since Ms Upshaw's voice was frequently submerged by the orchestra, especially the piano.
