Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field
The Arizona Diamondbacks debuted in 1998, making them one of five MLB franchises founded in the '90s. Often referred to as the D-backs, they have competed in the National League West since inception and have claimed five division titles. The team donned purple and teal but underwent somewhat of a rebrand in 2007 that switched the colors to red and black. Arizona is managed by Torey Lovullo and plays home games at Chase Field (formerly Bank One Park) in downtown Phoenix. The stadium is known nationwide for its pool — the first of its kind in any MLB venue. Chase Field holds just over 48,500 fans at capacity.
Arizona Diamondbacks History
Arizona's first postseason appearance came quickly. In 1999, just their second active season, the Diamondbacks won 100 regular-season games and made it to the NL Division Series before falling 3-1 to the New York Mets. The D-backs avenged that early exit by winning the 2001 World Series over the New York Yankees in seven games. In doing so, they became the fastest expansion team to win a title in MLB history. Their other playoff trips came in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2017, but none of those lasted beyond the NL Championship Series.
Torey Lovullo became the franchise's all-time winningest manager in 2022, passing Kirk Gibson, who managed the team from 2010 to 2014.
Arizona has three former players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame: Roberto Alomar, Randy Johnson and Alan Trammell. Johnson headlines the group as a five-time Cy Young Award winner and 2001 World Series MVP. Nicknamed Big Unit, Johnson was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era and pitched for the Diamondbacks from 1999 to 2004.
Johnson is the franchise's all-time leader in most pitching categories, while retired outfielder Luis Gonzalez is the all-time leader in career home runs (224), hits (1,337) and games played (1,194), among other batting categories.
