American Football earned their status as one of the most influential bands within the Midwestern emo scene during their brief first run in the late ’90s. After releasing their 1999 self-titled debut (also known as LP1), the Urbana, Illinois trio composed of frontman Mike Kinsella, guitarist Steve Holmes and drummer Steve Lamos disbanded in 2000. American Football reunited in 2014 with the three founding members plus Kinsella’s cousin, bassist Nate Kinsella. A reissue of LP1 that year reached No. 68 on the Billboard 200, and the band built on their comeback momentum with their second self-titled album in 2016, which also charted on the Billboard 200. A third eponymous album arrived in 2019 with American Football’s first collaborative songs featuring Hayley Williams, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell and Land of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell. In 2021, Lamos left the band, only to return in early 2023.?
