ALEX G IN CONCERT:
Indie rocker Alex G combines heart-wrenching honesty and an earnest innocence in his coming-of-age songs. His melancholy melodies and emotional lyrics reveal themes of shyness and alienation, but you'd never know it as he confidently performs songs like “Mary”, “Icehead”, and “Black Hair” in concert. With the addition of off-kilter guitar riffs, shuffling drums, and driving basslines, his touring band helps create a catchy and cathartic space for ticket buyers to rock out. Given his gift for cutting to the emotional core on every song while crafting unforgettable singalongs in the process, Alex G is sure to leave an impact on anyone who witnesses his passion in person.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Multi-instrumentalist Alex Giannascoli was born in 1993 in the Philadelphia suburbs. The youngest of three children in a musical family, he was influenced by his classical pianist brother and a sister who shared her love of Modest Mouse, Radiohead, and Wilco with him. By the age of 13 Alex G was recording his own music using his family’s home computer. Though he played in several high school bands, he realized by 2011 that he worked best alone and released his first online single, “Sandy”. The following year he released the album Trick online and gained praise from a growing internet fanbase. His first physical release came with his 2014 album DSU, after which he formed a full band and went on tour. Alex G continues to climb the ranks of indie rock world by touring with topnotch musicians and turning out stellar recorded material, including 2015’s Beach Music.
Over the course of their career, Alex G has played venues such as Webster Hall, the Greek Theatre, and the Observatory North Park to capacity.

life changing. perfect. incredible. amazing. even his slower songs are completely brought to life when performed live, it was mesmerizing. best experience of my life, i <3 alex g
Alex G was amazing and the Knitting Factory was great!
Loved that I got to see Alex perform again at a small/medium-sized indoor venue; the stage lights and acoustics were great. I also appreciate that the venue had staggered seats with a perfect view of the stage. Great show!
We arrived early and picnicked along the gorge . First band started right on time which we appreciated because only 1/4 of the concert hall was full. We didn’t know who they were. No one announced them. They announced their last two songs and left the stage. Alex G and his 3 other band mates took stage un announced. Played there songs exactly like the albums. I thought they might improvise a bit as his music has an experimental flair but no. He had some private public conversations with people in the pit which made no sense to us in 1st Teri. This shows lack of stage presence when the whole audience is not part of the show. He said “ what do you know? One day you wake up and you’re in Lewiston!” Not saying he liked it or hated being there. He announced his last too songs and left. No encore. Said it was their last show of tour and it was sad thanked his band mates stage crew and roadies. We thought he was the headliner and had no idea what happened to alvvays . We thought maybe part of alvvays was the first band ? People left. We left. A friend of mine next day said alvvays was great. They performed after Alex G. Wow . Terrible organization and stage presence in my opinion not to stay around for the last band. Not to announce what band is playing. Guess we weren’t in the clique to know everything. Bad news because alvvays was who my girlfriend wanted to see and hear and didn’t get the opportunity. Oh well a couple strikes against Alex G. 1) no improvisation 2) not making everyone part of the show. Maybe it wasn’t his job to announce the next band… Not a mentioning the teeny poppers standing and jumping around I. Front of us. Do you have to stand at a concert nowadays? If I wanted to stand we would have bought space in the pit. No MC?
We bought tickets to see Alvvays, who we have been fans of since seeing them open for the Decemberists years ago. Despite following indie rock, we were unfamiliar with Alex G. We thought he was excellent! Great voice. Well written songs, that were all very different from each other. We have since been exploring his stuff on Spotify. Alvvays we’re great, but Alex G won us over!
Didn’t have crazy expectations but knew there were some great songs in the discography. The guy is a bussy for sure but the band rips.
The seating and location at The Dell Music Center in Philadelphia were amazing. The venue is intimate and has a great sound system, which is important for Alex G's indie rock with a lo-fi aesthetic. However, the sound and lighting could have been better. At times, it was difficult to hear Alex G's vocals over the guitars, and the lighting was a bit too dark. Alex G himself was a bit of a mixed bag. He was clearly passionate about his music, but he didn't interact with the audience much. He mostly stood at the front of the stage and played his songs, which was fine, but it would have been nice to see him engage with the crowd a bit more. Overall, it was a good concert, but it could have been great. With a few tweaks, Alex G could put on a truly unforgettable show. Here are some specific things that could be improved: 1. The sound system could be adjusted to make Alex G's vocals more audible. 2. The lighting could be brighter, especially during the slower songs. 3. Alex G could interact with the audience more, such as by talking between songs or inviting them to sing along. *Despite these minor flaws, I would still recommend seeing Alex G live. His music is unique and his performances are passionate. With a few improvements, he could be one of the best live acts around.
Beautiful Great musicians Nice set list Perfeck venue
We attended with the understanding that Alvvays was the headliner. We were sad to realize that Alvvays was actually the opener, and they played an abbreviated set with no encore :( More full-show Alvvays dates on the east coast please!
